Processing Conflict

⚑ System 1 vs System 2β–Ό

Reading is an automatic, "System 1" process for most adults. Identifying a color is also fast, but slightly slower than reading the word.

When the word "BLUE" is printed in Red ink, your brain reads "BLUE" instantly. You have to actively suppress this automatic response to say "Red". This conflict causes a delay in reaction time, known as the **Stroop Effect**.
