Brightness Contrast

Watch the moving bar. It seems to lighten as it hits the dark side and darken as it hits the light side. But it never changes color.

Relative Perception

Our eyes are terrible at acting like light meters. We do not measure absolute photon counts. We measure **contrast**.

A grey object (reflecting 50% light) looks incredibly bright against black (0%), but dingy and dark against white (100%). This dynamic adjustment allows us to see detail in both dark caves and bright deserts.
