Popularized by M.C. Escher, the Penrose Stairs rely on distorted perspective angles. Like the triangle, each "step" is locally valid.
The illusion works because the change in height (Z-axis) is masked by the 2D layout. If built in 3D, the stairs would not connect at the final corner—one side would be much higher than the other.
